Quebec: Updated PPIPS

The Quebec ACT RESPECTING THE PROTECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR was updated in 2007 on the Legis Quebec website. Bill 64 was passed on September 22, 2021. Sections 93 through 152 of Bill 64 detailed the changes to be made to the ACT RESPECTING THE PROTECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR.

Working with the Data Alliance Collaborative, Newport Thomson created a spreadsheet that documented each section of the 2007 version, the changes spelled out in Bill 64 and the keywords that applied. This spreadsheet would allow the DCA to create a user friendly version of the revised law so organizations can read for themselves, which obligations apply to them. We will keep you posted regarding the posting of this handy tool.

Bill 64 comes into force in 3 stages:

  1. September 2022 – every organization’s CEO must publicly declare their Privacy Manager and every organization must implement a Confidentiality Incident Response Plan including a registry of all confidentiality incidents.
  2. September 2023 – almost all elements of Bill 64 come into effect
  3. September 2024 – the Data Portability come into effect.
